Pike's Peak
August 2, 2006

There are many ways for you to get up the 14,110 feet of Pike's Peak. You can drive up on the Pikes Peak Highway, which is 19 miles long and unpaved after halfway up the mountain. You have to pay a toll to get up the road that starts in Cascade, and it has many twists and turns. Others prefer to hike, bike, or push a peanut up with your nose (really, it's been done!) up the mountain via the Barr Trail. This starts just past Manitou Springs. The way we chose this time in August 2006 was the Cog Railroad that starts in Manitou Springs and is the highest cog railroad in the world.

This is how the Cog Railroad works!

And here's a close up of the sign so you can read their explanation about it.

This picture was taken by my brother. They had many pretty hummingbirds flying around everywhere.

Another angle of the hummingbird in the feeder.

The train engine! This is what brings you up the mountain.

A view up the mountain. This is probably one of the last clear views we had.

Another view up the mountain while riding the train.

And yet another! Look at the huge boulders. They are granite.

And here is where we start going into the clouds.

Almost at the top here!

And this is a view looking down from the top. It's still a bit cloudy.

And here is another side looking down. It was 50 degrees at the top and 85 degrees at the bottom.

You can kind of see the city down there through the clouds.

We're in the clouds. It actually hailed on us while we were up here.

Some day I'm going to go back when I'll be able to see more over the edge.

My brother, again conquering the mountain.

It's rather steep here.

I could see the city through the clouds here, but I don't think the picture came out quite as well. Try squinting.
